District A

With Nancy Jacobs coming out in full support of Chris Biggs, she has almost single handedly guaranteed Chris’s primary victory. I have not seen Paula Mullis at many events lately and it appears that she has seen the writing on the wall. The current poll on the site shows a clear Bigg’s advantage. I think this is a good thing for the party. Chris is a young Republican and I say the more the better. With the support of an unchallenged Jacobs, Biggs will be a formidable foe to Guthrie. I have read on some dem chat boards that Guthrie will have a very hard time beating an organized candidate. When looking at the numbers democrats have about 8,500 regular general voters compared to just 2,800 regular voting Republicans. Technically this seat should be a democratic seat. However, with approximately 10,000 votes cast in the last election, Guthrie won by only 60 votes. District A has a lot of democrats who do not tow the party line. This district is not as scary as the statistics might show.

I think the party should get energized behind Biggs and show a team effort in getting rid of Guthrie. We can look at this race as trial run to see if we can effectively combat democrats as a unit. Many people are focused on their own races at the moment and that is the way it should be. When the “best” Republicans emerge from the primary we need to turn our guns to the Rt. 40 corridor. Hooper will destroy Kollar and either McComas or Welsh will destroy LaPin. Stifler and Glassman (oh yeah, maybe Parrott) will destroy DeRan so we will all be free to help out down south. It makes too much sense for this to actually happen though. Imagine a council without Guthrie. It almost makes you want to send Biggs $20 right now doesn’t it?

I believe before you bury Paula, you need to know if you are reading the writing on the wall you need to get out of the head.
    1. Paula has been very busy in the last month caring for an elderly parent.
    2. In the past 10 days she has had to bury that parent. In the Jewish Religion she is not able to do very many public events. During the mourning period she has to sit Shiva for 8 days.
    3. Paula will be out and with her ability to campaign she does not need to answer to Nancy’s Machine.

Let’s not continue to make age a part of this campaign. Because if you want to know the break down of the registered voters there are not many who don’t think of people less than thirty as a kid. Let’s campaign on issues and where the candidates stand on those issues.

You have made known how you feel about Chris since the blog began. Chris and you are the same age and you relate to him.

  • 2 Fred Mullis // Jun 27, 2006 at 2:51 pm

    Aaron;
I answered you posting on District “A.” Do you only show comments that agree with you?
Paula is by no means out of this race. If anyone can defeat D. Guthrie,it is Paula. She has the name recoginzation and the experience to go head-to-head with Guthrie.

Paula’s absence from the sceen was temporary due to death of her father.

Again, age is not a issue to the voters. If anything the voters will look to some one with experience over the new kid. Don’t let the Jacob’s name dull your vision. In Joppa/Edgewood she only won her first race by 127 votes.

I think this analysis is on point. I don’t know if Paula Mullis is still running or not, but Chris Biggs has the energy, drive, and know how to run an effective campaign. He’ll be great for the Republican Party and the County as a Councilman.
It’s certainly exciting and gratifying to see how strong the Republican Party is in Harford County, particularly some of the younger activists. I’m talking about Scott Gibson and Greg Johnson for Central Committee; Chris Biggs, Brian Young, and Jason Galleon for Council; Dave Tritt for Sheriff; Chris Pate and Donna Stiffler for Delegate. Not every area is fortunate enough to have so much new blood to engergize the GOP. I hope voters take note and give some of these younger activists the opportunity to continue to grow the party and serve the county.

  • 4 DiscoChick // Jun 28, 2006 at 11:06 am

Throw Chris Rohe into that list of young blood for the central committee! It would be GREAT to have someone like Chris on the RCC. He has my vote!

  • 5 ReaganAgain08 // Jun 28, 2006 at 8:14 pm

Condolences to Paula Mullis on the death of her father. I would believe that everyone, regardless of party, age, and ideology, would (or at least should) willingly offer the same.

However, on the political front, while Paula means well, she is going to get smoked by Chris Biggs in their primary. And before anyone asks, I am not part of Nancy’s “machine.”

  • 6 hmmmm // Jun 28, 2006 at 10:22 pm

So Fred says that age is not an issue, then slams Biggs for being young? The important thing is get rid of Guthrie. What about that new guy that’s running against Guthrie as a Democrat? I think to get rid of Guthrie it’s going to take A LOT. I don’t know if either has it, but GOP is right, we need to really get behind somebody and take it all the way.

Paula is a dynamic lady. She has both the courage to tell you like it is and the grit to roll up her sleeves and work along side you to make things better. She is honest and tenacious, and I support her whole-heartedly.

The people of District A need Paula Mullis on the Harford County Council.

    Mr. Kane

Please do not use your Veteran status as a cheap trick to get votes. You place your website link two inches away from the word Veteran.

You might be a Veteran on paper Mr. Kane- but what war did you fight in?

I risked my life for our country and you are demeaning me and men like me.

  • 11 KEVIN KANE // Jul 1, 2006 at 2:11 am

There is no such thing as a “veteran on paper.”

Any veteran, man or woman, will tell you that.

    Thank you for your service.

  • 12 Sgt. Bilko // Jul 1, 2006 at 5:09 am

    Vietam Vet-

What a crappy thing to say to someone. So because he didn’t serve in Viet Nam, he can’t mention that he’s a veteran? He is a veteran of the United States Air Force, whether he pushed paper in an office somewhere in DC, or got his leg blown off in Afghanistan. It is a legitimate thing to say in a campaign, just as if a candidate were to list his educational achievements.

I genuinely thank you for your service to our country, but you need to get off your high horse and be thankful for his contributions as well. You shouldn’t feel “demeaned” at all by what Mr. Kane has said, and quite honestly, you sound like a whiner. Toughen up! We are turning into a nation of WUSSES!

  • 13 VietnamVet // Jul 4, 2006 at 6:03 pm

Don’t tell me to toughen up. You girls get to sit in air conditioning filling out paperwork because MEN like me spend months at a time hip high in rice patties hunting charlie.

Kane- you can put your Veteran status down- but you tell us what you did.

Do you ever take a bullet? Did you ever kill a man for your country?

    We want to know.

  • 14 Sgt. Bilko // Jul 5, 2006 at 3:42 am

When was the last time you spent time in rice patties in VietNam? Quit being such a cry baby. We’re thankful for what you did, but you don’t have to put everyone else down because they didn’t have the opportunity to do what you did.
“WE” don’t need to know. “YOU” want to know. “YOU” already know.
Stop being a girly man and move on.

  • 15 Mike German // Aug 8, 2006 at 3:44 pm

I have lived in Edgewood for over 5 years now, and I have known the Mullis family for 13 years now. I have to say from experience if anyone can get thing done the right way in the Joppa/Edgewood area, it’s Paula Mullis. It would be a mistake to vote for anyone else.

  • 16 GOPerative // Aug 8, 2006 at 5:51 pm

In this race we need to look and see who can beat Guthrie. Mullis might be able to do the job but can she beat Guthrie? My money is on Biggs but regardless I will support the winner of the primary against Neon.

  • 17 Mike German // Aug 8, 2006 at 7:06 pm

It’s all about getting your name out in front of people in the local races. Sonce you won’t be advertising on tv, the average person only sees what they read in the paper, and the names on the signs in peoples yards. You don’t want the first time a voter sees your name to be on the ballot. A lot of voters aren’t well informed when they go to vote, and will vote on name recognition. So you want them to know your name.

  • 18 Michael Mullis // Aug 10, 2006 at 6:29 pm

I know I’ve been out of Harford County for a little while, but I know the things my Mother has been doing in that country for a good while now.

Before we talk about drive and energy, it needs to be clear that Paula has that drive and that energy. You can see it in the way she has totally turned around the Harford County Republican Women’s club (with the help of some of the other great women in that organization). She’s been active in a number of different things in the community since as long as I can remember.

You have been able to see her drive over the last few months as she has marched in the 4th of July parades walking next to Michael Steele and Bob Ehrlich. You see it as people were meeting her left and right at the Farm Fair this year. You see it as she’s out there walking the streets, going door-to-door, talking to business owners. Oh, and actually going INTO Edgewood and talking to people instead of merely talking about it from a distance. In fact, I believe you would have seen her last week at the Craig press conference when they were talking about the new deputies being deployed in the area. And from people that have talked to me directly, she’s got a little more respect and support from the community than you guys might know about. And it’s because she’s GOING OUT AND GETTING IT, and not just resting on Nancy Jacob’s name and money.

Look, I’ve been reading this blog for a while, and it’s advertising for Chris and Nancy. And that’s cool, that’s what blogs can do. But before you underestimate what’s happening, you might want to do more than look at the poll on this site.

BTW, to answer GOPerative’s question about whether my Mother could beat Dion Guthrie, the answer is absolutely. She can, and she will.

  • 19 Anon // Aug 10, 2006 at 9:23 pm

Didn’t Chris actually live in Edgewood. And where was Paula 3 years ago, because she wasn’t showing up to community events then.

  • 20 Michael Mullis // Aug 10, 2006 at 9:43 pm

BTW I need to make a couple things perfectly clear, since I am the son of the candidate we are talking about.

    1) My mother had no knowledge of this until it was shown to her. So in case anyone thought I was being put up to posting, that is not it. I only knew about this because my friend Mike German also unsolicitedly posted here.

    2) I want to make sure it is understood I am not attacking Nancy or Chris, their policies, etc:. I’ve known Nancy for a very long time; even played one of her children’s weddings in my band. And I really don’t know much more about Chris Biggs other than what I read in his letter he sent out. And I am sure if he wins the primary he’s more than capable of being a councilperson. But it does rub me the wrong way when I read things that mischaracterize things when it comes to what she’s doing and can do. To read “However, on the political front, while Paula means well, she is going to get smoked by Chris Biggs in their primary,” suggests that people are writing the primary off perhaps without even talking to or meeting Paula. It is certainly conceivable that she will lose the primary. And if she does, then so be it. But “she is going to get smoked” is I think a little out there.

And when I see “Mullis might be able to do the job but can she beat Guthrie?”, that suggests to me that GOP also hasn’t ever talked to or looked closely at Paula’s service to Harford County and what she does to advance the ideals of Conservatism and Republicanism there.

    3) Before anyone asks why I’m getting involved since I live in Baltimore City (I’m sure someone has looked it up by now), I have lived in Harford County for 26 years before moving to the City. Joppatowne was my home for a long time, both on Plaza Circle and Rumsey Island. And my wife, child, and I are moving back to Edgewood in the next month to a place where I grew up with my family boating on the Bush River out of Trojan Harbor. I lived there when the Edgewood Shopping Center had a theater in it. So I know the area.

Anyway, just wanted to clarify that.

  • 21 DiscoChick // Aug 10, 2006 at 11:41 pm

I thought Paula was on the GOPerative’s “A” list. What advertising for Biggs are you talking about?

  • 22 Me // Aug 11, 2006 at 4:16 am

Apparently, Michael either IS Fred Mullis (hence the meticulous pre-emptive defense in the previous post), or he writes exactly like him. Those are the longest posts I have ever seen– much like the seemingly infinite description of Mrs. Mullis in her first piece of campaign literature. I resent the brazen attempts by Fred and “Michael” to backpeddle on the Mullis’ sour-grapes postings about Nancy Jacobs. Fred said way back in the beginning “Paula will be out and with her ability to campaign she does not need to answer to Nancy’s Machine.” And Michael says “And it’s because she’s GOING OUT AND GETTING IT, and not just resting on Nancy Jacob’s name and money,” which is apparently a dig at Chris Biggs. Now they want to play nice. You can’t have it both ways, gentlemen. Nancy has forgiven you because she is a tremendous woman. I can’t say that those who support her feel the same way.

  • 23 hmmmm // Aug 11, 2006 at 10:38 am

Michael ran against Sue Hesselton back in 1998 and lost to her by 30 points in the District A primary. Whoever wins the primary deserves it. Both Chris and Paula appear to be working hard. I hope this isn’t a Mullis attempt to say that if Chris wins he doesn’t deserve it because we as Republicans need to be ready to line up against the winner of the primary to get rid of Neon.

  • 24 Fred Mullis // Aug 11, 2006 at 12:53 pm

When I post something I put my name on it. The last post I did was an apology to Nancy.

  • 25 Michael Mullis // Aug 11, 2006 at 12:54 pm

Wow, so this is how it is huh? You get attacked by people who don’t even have the guts to use real names? Well, in that case I could care less what you resent. What I said about “Mr. Biggs” is absolutely true and not an attack on anything. He’s constantly pictured with Nancy, and it’s well known he uses her name as well as Bob Ehrlich’s name and Michael Steele’s name in his literature. It’s one thing if it wasn’t true.

And I apologize for my typing, as I am a product of the Joppatowne/Magnolia school system. I did learn a thing or two while I was there.

I’m actually sorry I took any of this seriously. My mistake.

And BTW, my Father and I are two seperate people. We at least do use our real names because we are not afraid to defend “Mrs. Mullis” (another sign you have absolutely no idea anything about her). You guys have fun with your little blog.

  • 26 Michael Mullis // Aug 11, 2006 at 1:07 pm

BTW hmmmm, you are right. I did run against Sue in 1998. One of the reasons I lost so bad was because in 1998 I had to run county-wide, which is not the case anymore. It’s was pretty hard to beat an entrenched incumbent back then when you had to also go up to Havre de Grace and Aberdeen to campaign.

And if you read what I said before people started to get bent out of shape, I have no problem supporting the Republican candidate to beat Deion. I’m hoping to be back in the area in time to get my registration changed to vote in Edgewood, which unfortunately will be past the primary anyway. If it’s Chris Biggs, then that is who I will vote.

  • 27 Me // Aug 11, 2006 at 2:48 pm

Hmmm… Fred Mullis posted at 12:53 PM and then Michael, from Baltimore City, was able to post and submit by 12:54 PM. That’s quite a coincidence! So much for “having the guts to use your own name!” Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Paula have Ehrlich on her literature now too? Doesn’t she also have him on her website? Just an observation…

  • 28 "EW" // Aug 11, 2006 at 3:23 pm

    DiscoChick;

You asked where Paula has been. She has been involved with the Coast Guard Aux. working with Kids on water safety, Safe Boating, keep the chesapeake clean so that people in Joppa and Edgewood can enjoy the Parks, and waterways. She has been involved with Habitat for Humanity bothe in Aberdeen and Edgewood so that single moms can recoginize the American Dream and own their own home. She was involve with the community clean-up programs in Edgewood. She has been a member of the Edgewood Community Council for the last year.

That is where she has been. Plus she has worked on keeping the Republican Party Strong in Harford County, MD and the USA. She will continue to do this plus work very hard for the people of Edgewood, Joppa and Joppatowne.

  • 29 Fred Mullis // Aug 11, 2006 at 5:09 pm

I believe the GOPoperative controls the uploads. So that is how two people can have a upload time close to the same.

  • 30 GOPerative // Aug 11, 2006 at 5:27 pm

    Fred,
You are correct that I control the uploading of the posts however they are time stamped and posted in the order that they were received. The site does that automatically. On a side note, the times are off by 4 hours. I never changed the default when I set up the site and I think the default time is set for the Left Coast. I’ll look into fixing that.

  • 31 hmmmm // Aug 11, 2006 at 6:12 pm

    Michael,

I agree that the dynamic has changed much since the race in 1998 by having in district elections, but if you extrapolate the precincts that are in the Joppatowne Edgewood area, Sue Hesselton still won by a 2-1 margin. I don’t want to keep dragging this out, but it is not a great excuse.

I don’t want to see people just voting for the primary winner, I think we should all be actively working for their victory over Dion. I also want to see Rob Wagner say that he will support the Republican candidate, whoever it is, over Dion Guthrie. It is important that our County Council President candidates all answer the question that they will put the good of the county, and the good of the party over petty differences they may have with candidates. Boniface, Kazi and Wagner (along with all other district winners) should all pledge their support and time against Dion. Mary Dulany James and Dion Guthrie are the only things standing in our way.

  • 32 DiscoChick // Aug 11, 2006 at 11:24 pm

    “EW”-

No, I didn’t ask where Paula has been. But thanks anyway for the info.

  • 33 Mike German // Aug 14, 2006 at 10:12 am

This is for Me Says, you may not realize it but when you compare Mike to Fred it’s actually a compliment. Fred is a great person and father, so saying someone is like him is a good thing. I also guess that you don’t realize that since they are father and son that they would share the same believes, values, and traits like most children do with their parents. But right now I am not giving you that much credit because since you can’t argue your point based on any facts, and have reduced yourself to accusing people of things without any proof. But I guess in your mind that they both can’t post and support Paula.

I found this site on my own last week when looking for more information on the District A race. I have never been asked to post by the Mullis family to support them, I did that on my own. The only thing I did was ask for one of Paula’s sign to put in my front yard to show my support.

  • 34 Nancy Jacobs // Aug 29, 2006 at 11:19 am

    Hey guys,

Spend more time working for your candidates than talking about them. I have known the Mullis family for over 32 years, they are absolutely wonderful people. Everyone knows I am supporting Biggs – he has worked with me and I know how capable he is. Whoever wins that race has my unwavering support.

At the FOP candidate forum Chris Biggs, Paula Mullis and I stood together joking and talking in plain view of everyone in the place. In case anyone was wondering what was said in that conversation, Chris and Paula were promising to support each other after the primary. In fact you will see them going door to door together for whichever one of them wins the primary. When quality people like Biggs and Mullis are willing to work for one another after their primary against each other, you have to respect them. I know I sure do.

Sometimes supporters and family members take things more personally than the candidates do themselves. I know this to be true from personal experience. I’ve had to tell my daughters numerous times in the past not to worry about or answer back when someone attacks me personally.

Don’t go conjuring up a nasty race between Biggs and Mullis….the candidates are above that and they both are running hard and clean campaigns. It’s times like this that I am proud to be a Republican.

  • 35 Mike German // Sep 1, 2006 at 2:08 pm

For those of you who weren’t at the furum at Edgewood High School this past Monday, you missed a great event. It was great to get a chance to put some faces with the names I see on the signs. I also going into the event was undecided on who to vote for for sheriff. One man got my full attention and my full support. That man is Ray Clasing. I now proudly have his sign in my front yard next to Paula Mullis’.
