District D Qualifications?

March 20th, 2006 · 14 Comments

With the exiting of “lame duck” Lance Miller it looks like we have a fairly contested race on our hands. I never thought that there would be such a draw to the District D poll. At the writing of this article there were 231 votes cast. In the last Republican primary in District D there was a total of 3,021 votes cast in the actual primary election. Let’s pretend that all 231 votes cast were by people in-district. I am having a hard time believing that close to 10% of the district cast a vote in a poll on little harfordrepublican.com. Call me a cynic. Yes, I know that the poll is not scientific and that anyone from anywhere can vote, but 231 votes? The David Craig poll only received 83 total votes. I am not accusing anyone of ballot stuffing (cheating) but I am looking into it.

There have been several comments posted in favor of Chad Shrodes, one telling me to put the District D article in the garbage. I did eventually change the picture out of fairness. Simply because I do not agree with you does not make my opinion garbage. If I am factually incorrect about anything, then it is garbage and it needs to be thrown out and/or corrected. The fact is that Chad was a democrat and a very active one at that. That is and will be a problem for him. Yes he has been working very hard for the Republican Party to “cover” up his past. However, I have the feeling it will not be the last time in this election year that we see a picture of Al Gore and Chad Shrodes together. That is his vulnerability. His supporters should be thanking me because the earlier you air out your dirty laundry the better.

Another person who defended Chad took some shots at Amy Hopkins Daney that I thought were a bit overboard. So, because Amy is not a bureaucrat or a career politician and happens to be a horse farmer she is unqualified to serve her district and this county? The arrogance in that kind of statement is sickening. Where would we be today as a country if people with “no qualified experience” sat on their laurels, twiddling their thumbs? These arguments need to be rejected by the voters for the true garbage that they are. The fact is that many people in this county are qualified to lead. But most could not be bothered to deal with the petty people that will throw criticisms like the abovementioned. What experience do you bring? Well, I love Harford County, I have lived here for quite some time, I think we can do better, and here is what I would like to do. That is it people. That is what makes you qualified. A love for Harford County, a belief that we can do better, and a plan. It is the voter’s job to decide who has the best plan and who they can truly trust to make this county a better place.

If a love for Harford County, residency, a belief that we can do better, and a plan makes you qualified, what makes you unqualified? I leave that up for discussion.

I usually do not respond to these HOWEVER….I could not agree with you more about Chad Shrodes. Surely we can do better! He is a DEMOCRAT in sheeps clothing. What are HIS qualifications? Real Estate Agent? nope, not any more. Insurance Agent? nope, not any more. Mortgage Broker? nope, not any more. Is he still working for Harford County Planning and Zoning?? What a mess that is, so probably yes!

Everyone check out the ‘interesting’ essay on http://harfordvista.com/

I’ll give you three guesses which soon to be minority party of harford county we all think the writer belongs to.

    Anonymous-

If I lived in District D, I would support Jason Gallion. I think he is the best candidate in the race.
However, I would caution you about “qualifications”. Really, what “qualifications” do you need to be a county councilman? It isn’t rocket science. I think it is more important that we hire people with good character and ideas (like Gallion), not necessarily someone with a long list of “qualifications”. It seems to me that this government is being screwed up by lots of people with lots of “qualifications”.
I think we need to get back to a government of the people, for the people, and by the people- and not just elect and re-elect the people who are in government already.

The Republican primary in D has practically turned into a general election. Both Shrodes and Dany are Democrats. They both switched very recently simply to improve their chances at winning. Shrodes is a desperate climber who will do anything to get into office and Dany thinks this will be a fun little adventure- a rich blue blood trying to buy an office. Neither should be allowed to survive a REPUBLICAN primary.

Please put that Al Gore/ Schrodes picture back up. I was disappointed when you buckled to pressure and pulled it down. Everyone (except Schrode’s pals) thought it was hilarious.

According to the SBOE (which all seems like ‘05 data)

Shrodes has $6,015.57 in contributions, $1,500 from his dad (possibly from his campaign from ‘02?..which was a lot of developer $$$).
    Gallion has $3,285.00 in contributions
There are no records for any of the remaining candidates.

    PolJunk,

The last campaign finance filing was way back in January, so I don’t know how helpful that info is by now. Look for the pre-primary filing in August to see where folks are getting their $$$.

Regardless of how much money is raised, I think people are impressed with Gallion when he speaks. When Chad Shrodes speaks, people are even more impressed with Gallion.

PolJunk should do his homework! Chad Shrodes could not have received money from his father, because he passed away 14 years ago.

Before you make anymore ridiculous charges, you should get your facts straight!

I am a Democrat who happens to think that Chad Shrodes should be judged by his support of the people of his district and his county. He and his family have contributed to the enterprises of Harford County for many years before most of his detracters were born – or certainly before they moved here and became instant authorities. He knows the demographics of the area he wants to represent and certainly has many etablished personal, business and political contacts that would benefit that same area. In some cases a party affiliation doesn’t matter a hoot, and the measure of the man is more important.

No moderation necessary when you tell the truth. But then I don’t vote in tht area so my comment is moot.

    PolJunk-
It was his UNCLE, not his dad- TOP was correct. An honest mistake, I’m sure.

Whatever his party affiliation and why he may have changed affiliation when he did, Chad Shrodes has proven to be an impressive candidate. At first I was more intriuged by Gallion, but that has changed over the past month or so. Gallion may have been a Republican for a longer period of time than Shrodes, but his Glassman connection bothers me more all the time. Regardless, even though it’s not my district, I’m still enjoying the horserace.

Actually, I already knew Dave is his uncle. I know his two aunts as well for those of you telling me to do my homework…along with the fact that Dave is the executor of his late-mother’s will.

Sorry about the admitted mistake in my haste. BTW, what was the ‘ridiculous charge’ I made? The developer $$$? That’s indisputable.

I am glad to see that others share my same opinion on the “Chad Schrodes” issue. Yesterday’s landslide win is proof that a name recognition campaign works. If you have the money to buy your signs big enough and plaster them on enough corners – you can buy yourself a seat in the county council. I have seen this guy speak at various functions and am curious who is doing the writing for him? Who’s campaign was this anyway? his uncle’s? Every time I heard him speak in public – he was a studdering mess. I approached him personally to try to get a feel for his “plan of action” once in office and frankly he acted dumbfounded. I’m beginning to wonder if there is even anything upstairs. If his “experience” is the fact that he works in planning and zoning – that’s scary! That just goes to show that he has been part of the actions that most are trying to Change. I don’t think this guy is going to hold up under the pressure. I think the name recognition win may have earned him a seat on the council – but I have not doubt that he won’t be able to hold it – once everyone can see him in action without his “backup team” to tell him what to say and do. I’ll be anxious to see if he is able to stand up to the developers that helped to fund his race – even if it was only to waive a sign on his behalf. Should be an interesting year

I graduated from North Harford with Chad. If what “Stunned” said is true (about his bumbling during a speech and his lack brain power) he has not progressed much in the last 15 years or so. As far as switching parties just remember the old addage… A leopard never changes his spots.
