I saw on FOX News that O'Malley won but when I looked at the numbers Ehrlich was up by 20,000 votes.  With as many as 193,000 absentee ballots we will not know for sure for several days.  I think it looks good for Ehrlich.  Steele is slightly behind but again absentee ballots will benefit Republican candidates.

Locally the for sure winners include Boniface, McMahan, Shrodes, Slutzky, Lisanti, Bane, Dulany-James, Dan Riley, Glassman, Stifler, McComas, Hooper, Hopkins, and Reilly.

Races that are fairly close include Jacobs vs. Kilby (don't have Cecil County numbers), Biggs vs. Guthrie, Chenowith vs. Twanmoh, and Craig vs. Helton (Republicans have leads in all races except District A).

For the most part the local races have been decided.  The Ehrlich and Steele numbers will be trickling in throughout the night.  I'm going to bed.  One thing is for sure, I will be waking up to a much more democratic country.

Watching the returns on Fox News National Channel at 2:00 AM, I am feeling a bit ILL. The numbers for Ehrlich are not looking too good at this time. So much for that bombshell that everyone was bragging would take O’Scary out of the equation. Yuck. The hope of the absentee ballots is a slim one, and I just don’t know if I can allow myself to hang on to that….

As a friend of mine said tonight, the dems didn’t so much win the election as the GOP LOST. Hopefully these days will cause some serious soul searching within our party and help in a return to what makes the Republicans the better of two choices in this country. The performance of those in office over the past few years has often left me wondering just whose party they belonged to, so bad has the ” RINO ” effect become.

Time to batten down the hatches and prepare to weather some more democrat storms in the coming years. Sigh….

It is now 2:30 AM and Mongomery and Prince Georges Counties still have no results posted on the states’s election website. WHY are they not posted? So much for getting quick results! At this point, Ehrlick is ahead by a good amount. I smell a problem here!

Well now that the votes are in what will Norm run for next? We don’t elect dog catcher. But I did hear that the Wal Mart greeter is an elected postion. Good luck Norm I can wait to get my smiley face from you.

See I told you so! The corrupt abuse of power by the GOP Congress is the cause of this. Ehrlich and Steele trying to run as Democrats and kicking Scott Rolle under the bus. Nice work boys. Time for nw leadership in RNC and MDGOP.

  • 5 Publican // Nov 8, 2006 at 7:13 pm

Well, it could have been worse. R’s lost big time across the country but in Harford we pretty much held our own. In my opinion we lost from the top. Why didn’t Rumsfeld get dumped 2 months ago? With Bob E taking a hit I am afraid that it we will have 4 years of Spenddenning spending. Open up your wallets. Sheila Dixon will have her hand out for the City and Oh’Malley will give it to her. It’s time to move to Wyoming.

I am so frustrated with the national and statewide results that the local results ring “hollow”. I am so tired of living in a one party state that the ideal of moving has never been more appealing! What is even more frustrating is that I’m a member of a party that the leadership (Both Nationally and Statewide) can not remember or refuses to remember what the definition of “Conservatism” is. They are more interested in being adored by the media then they are in maintaining their values and convictions. Please tell me who is on the horizon that will take this party (rather Return this party) to the direction it once was and made it one I was once proud of and could get enthusiastic about. Is there any hope nationally or statewide? I am now returning to packing my belongings.

At least we have Harford. Nice and safely Republican. Hooper, McComas, Boniface, Glassman, Stiffler, Jacobs… all did very well….

except for 2 Republicans who totally lack any charisma or leadership skills: Cochran and Craig.

Craig BARELY beat Helton. That is some sad stuff. Any Republican worth his salt will be able to knock him out in a primary in 4 years. I would not be suprised if his big business backers are already looking for a back up contender. They would be foolish not too.

Bane could beat him in 4.

  • 8 EW // Nov 9, 2006 at 11:19 am

I hope you remember Sheryl Kohl. She was a true & good Republican that was thrown to the wolves. The sad part is she will not come back.

  • 9 vborgese // Nov 9, 2006 at 11:39 am

I hope Criag doesn’t take this to be a mandate from the voters. He barely escaped with a win over a marginal opponent. He is vulnerable for the next election in a primary or even a general. He is laying the groundwork for raising taxes and expanding the government which would be a disaster for us. The GOP needs to get back to ideas… reduce government, improve transportation, LOWER TAXES even if you have to cut government to do it.

  • 10 Publican // Nov 9, 2006 at 6:53 pm

Cheryl Kohl had a hard row to hoe along the route 40 corridor. It is a shame she lost but any R in that district would have had the same, tough problem. That Glen Glass got more votes than Cheryl shows just how dumb the voters in that district are. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve met and spoken with Glass and he is a nice guy with some good ideas but he should never have gotten more votes than she did. Even worse, they returned Dan Riley to Annapolis……

  • 11 hmmmm // Nov 9, 2006 at 9:35 pm

    Publican,

I think you have to look honestly at Kohl getting less votes than Glass and realize that it wasn’t the voters being dumb, but Glass running a better campaign. He beat Pate when everyone passed him off because of a better run campaign and now he beat Kohl (sort of). Glass worked hard because he wanted it more than anyone else. If it hadn’t been a bad year for Republicans it would have been Glass and James going to Annapolis.

  • 12 Ellie // Nov 10, 2006 at 4:40 pm

Who says Craig is planning a run in four years, anyway? I think we all remember the marginal victory in exec race 8 years ago and the marginal victory in the exec race 8 years before that and so on and so on.

  • 13 GOPREDISGOOD // Nov 11, 2006 at 11:12 pm

Since Craig finished the rest of Harkins term I believe this will be his last time he can run. I think one of the conditions of taking the position after Harkins left was that you could only run one more time ( Thus, completing Harkins term plus this term is the two term limit). So, who will be next?

  • 14 hmmmm // Nov 12, 2006 at 2:16 pm

    GOPREDISGOOD,

you are mistaken, Craig can run for a second term on his own.

  • 15 Cliff // Nov 12, 2006 at 3:50 pm

Craig can run again. He has indicated in speeches his desire to do this. We’ll see if and who challenges him the next time around. I doubt any serious challenges will arise from within the party because the GOBN will rally behind him. There are also too few principled politicians to go against the flow.

  • 16 not so fast // Nov 13, 2006 at 11:41 am

    hmmmm….

I think you are right on in your assessment of the Kohl and Glass campaigns. Glass appealed to voters in the Rt 40 corridor because he was a breath of fresh air. Glass lived in Edgewood and Edgewood apparently loved him.

Glass wasn’t your typical candidate running for office. He ran his campaign on the ground on a daily basis. He signed waved in the morning and sometimes even waved twice a day and on weekends. What he lacked in money he more than made up for in hard work. Glass carried most precincts. He defeated Kohl in her own precinct by over 100 votes.

Kohl is a really nice person. Unfortunately, really nice people don’t necessarily make the best possible candidates for public office. She appeared to be a good delegate, but not a good candidate.

Kohl lost twice in republican primaries for the House of Delegates before. That alone should have told her and the central committee something.

Why the Central Committee chose someone with that kind of track record to replace Boutin defies logic. The Central Committee should have listened to all of the elected officials who supported other nominees to fill that vacancy. They are the one who know winning campaigns when they see them. They tried to tell the Central Committee that she wasn’t the best candidate for the job and they were rebuffed. As nice a person as Kohl is, unfortunately she is incapable of winning. It shouldn’t be that way, but this election proved that for a third time.

Paying your dues to the party should earn you a place on the Central Committee, not an appointment to an open seat when you’ve already proven twice that you aren’t capable of even winning a primary election – she lost in two republican primaries.

Its not Kohl’s fault she lost this time. The blame sits squarely on the shoulders of the Central Committee for putting her in that position.

The Republican Central Committee should take a good hard look at themselves and how they operate. It is obvous that the GOBN runs the central committee and that they base their selections/nominations to open seats solely on who has kissed their ring over the years, not on who has the best potential to win.

It was a rough year in District 34 for republicans…Craig only got 40% of the vote in the Rt 40 corridor, Ehrlich got 55%, Steele got 57% and Jacobs got 58%. You know it is a bad year for republicans when even Jacobs only gets 58% of the vote in the Rt 40 area.

Its time to re-group and be realistic. Maybe under the leadership of Mike Geppi that can happen. We can only hope.

  • 17 I DIG NANCY // Nov 13, 2006 at 7:19 pm

    not so fast-
I disagree with you on your assessment of the Jacobs race. Jacobs was specifically targeted in that district when the dems did their gerrymandering several election cycles ago. The fact that she has won twice since then is in itself quite remarkable in my view and speaks volumes about her as a candidate. She won 58% in a HEAVILY democratic area. That is almost a 20 point spread. I think she beat Artie Helton 60-40% in 2002, and I thought that was a pretty good thumping. Bill Kilby appears to be much more likable than Helton, but it only got him 2%. Unlike Craig, Jacobs is a real conservative. I agree with you on Craig, however. He didn’t even win any precincts in Havre DeGrace.
On Kohl, she was the 4th highest vote getter on a 3 person slate. Besides, she was a FAR better option than any of the other names I heard mentioned, unfortunately one of those names made it onto the central committee this time. I don’t have much hope for the new central committee. Hopefully they will prove me wrong.

    Dig Nancy,
Maybe we can “draft” Nancy to run for County Executive next time. Then we could have a real conservative running the show in Harford County. She could easily beat the weakened Craig in a primary and she has really shown an ability to get Democratic votes in the southern end of the county. She’d be the best person to build the party as well.
Anyone out there agree and want to start a draft nancy campaign?

  • 19 I DIG NANCY // Nov 14, 2006 at 8:53 pm

    Where do I sign up???

  • 20 Me // Nov 14, 2006 at 9:34 pm

Nancy has already said on this blog that she is not going to run for County Exec. I wish as much as you do that she would, but the chances are slim-to-none.

  • 21 NorthernGOPer // Nov 15, 2006 at 10:30 am

David Craig has said at speaches that it would be an “historic time” for Harford because he plans on serving 10 years- and plans to do so. God help us. Overdevelopment. Higher Taxes. A county executive that works for the developers and not the people. Arrogance.

Attention other County Republicans: Stop looking at your own personal careers and the safety of your current jobs and STEP UP TO THE PLATE. Craig needs a serious REPUBLICAN challenger in 4 years. You all know who you are and you are not acting as public servants by not taking on this challenge. Your constituents deserve better!

    To “me says”

Given the current set of circumstances with O’Malley as gov, I think Jacobs could be talked into “coming home” and helping the county. When she said no before it was when Ehrlich was Governor. Hope was springing eternal back then. It sure isn’t now with “Governor” O’Malley. It sickens me to use the word Governor in the same breathe as O’Malley…..

Jacobs overwhelmingly won the Rt 40 corridor and Craig lost it 60-40. Both are R’s. So what’s the difference between Craig and Jacobs?

If I were Craig I’d be packing my bags. Either Glassman or Jacobs will challenge Craig in 2010…or at least they should. Have you priced a house in Havre de Grace? The taxes are terrible thanks to David Craig. The sales people at Bulle Rock acknowledge that the taxes, hook up fees, extra charges are hurting sales….all this happened when Craig was mayor.

Do we want Craig to do to Harford County what he did to Havre de Grace? That sounds vaguely familiar…..do to Maryland what he did to Baltimore……wasn’t there another mayor that said something similiar to that? Oh thats right, now HE is governor.

And I’m hearing that Bob Hockaday is on O’Malley’s transition team. So Craig has his advisors advising O’Malley? What’s next folks?

    Deleware is looking mighty good.

    Gop’er,

Great point about the change in Governor. It definately will not be as fun for Republicans in Annapolis anymore, so maybe Nancy will come home and lead the county. The commute is alot better and she could save the rest of us from another 4 years of David Craig!
    Here’s to hoping….
